Arthur Burkhardt (1857–1918) was a man who understood the value of patience and the ticking of a legal clock. In the precision workshops of Glashütte, he spent years refining the Arithmometer technology while waiting for the rolling patent strategy to finally expire in 1888.
The moment the doors were flung open, he standardised production, made mechanical logic more innovative and, crucially, more affordable. He transformed the calculator into a robust, factory-born workhorse of commerce and triggered an explosion of Arithmometer clones.
