Gordon Welchman (1906–1985) was the engineer who brought Turing’s theories to life and turned the Bombe into a weapon of war. A mathematician at Bletchley Park, his most significant contribution was the diagonal board — a complex lattice of electrical terminals that accounted for the Enigma’s plugboard.
This single innovation made the Bombe exponentially more powerful. He was also a pioneer of traffic analysis, which helped transform the raw logic of the code-breakers into actionable intelligence for the front lines.
