Joseph Clement (1779–1844) was a master toolmaker with the legendary precision required to bring Charles Babbage’s dreams to life. In an era when most mechanical parts were hand-filed and unique, Clement pioneered the use of standardised screws and high-precision lathes.
As lead engineer, he oversaw the construction of the beautiful, polished components for the Difference Engine. However, their partnership was volatile, and a dispute over compensation and the rights to the specialised tools Clement had developed led to a spectacular falling-out in 1832, resulting in the project being abandoned.
