Luigi Menabrea (1809–1896) was an Italian military engineer and future Prime Minister when he played an accidental but vital role in computing history. In 1840, Babbage gave lectures in Turin about the Analytical Engine. Menabrea took meticulous notes, producing the first and only comprehensive technical description of how it would actually function.

These notes reached Ada Lovelace, who translated them from French. By documenting the logic of the machine, Menabrea provided the technical bridge for the world to understand Babbage’s genius long after the brass had stopped clicking.
